WMP, Real Player, and DivX Player won't play most avi's anymore on my computer what should I do?

I have system restored, unistalled, reinstalled, upgraded all three of them and even reinstalled XP. I later bought nero showtime and it plays all files. so what could be the problem? any info or ideas?
