Star Wars question...?

in order for Luke to become a Jedi, why was it necessary for him to defeat Darth Vader? i don't recall any other would be Jedi having to defeat a Sith Lord to become a Jedi. and why did he toss away his light saber while speaking to the Emperor at the end of Return of The Jedi? just curios...
