What is an average height for a tripod?

i have a Nikon L110, and struggling tremendously with the slow shutter speed with no flash hand held ( as you would!! ) so I have decided to by myself a tripod for self portraits and panoramas etc.. I was wondering what the average height or good height for a tripod would be? I am about 5"5 and I have found one that is a maximum height of 4"5. would this be an okay height for me???
